Business Class
This class was a traditional accounting class in a computer lap, where the students used pens and papers to solve the activity. It was not effected when the teacher was late for the class about 10 minutes. This effected the students badly when two students were late from the class more than 15 minutes. I believe that one important role of teachers is to be punctual, to give the students a good perspective about not being late from the class. This help to settle down the students quickly and establish a positive mental set form them as Kyriacou reported.
Due to the boring routine and solving the activity, one student started to make noise by talking to other students. It will be more effective for the students to use technology to assist the teacher to deal with inappropriate or disruptive classroom behavior as Arends suggested. Furthermore, as Kyriacou stated “ The variety of activities must elicit and sustain pupils attention, interest and motivation”.
I think that the teacher needs to make sure that students are motivated and supported to learn, with high positive expectations conveyed by doing things differently. For example, integrating technology in the lesson, she can create some games or search for online activities to let the students work individual or in peers.
The teacher can develop a quiz using web quest for the students to check their previous knowledge. First she can give them an example to help them to memorize and recall their previous knowledge. Also, this quiz will assist the students’ understanding when it gives them immediate feedback.
English Class Reflection
To reflect on the previous English class I attended. It was a traditional class the lesson was about the steps of writing an essay.
Attending to this class helped me to relies the importance of integrating technology in teaching rather than using papers and pens to teach. It reminds me to old classroom sets where the students are empty vessel and the teacher fill in their minds with knowledge. I discovered that the students’ motivation, engagement and participation in classroom were low, as result of using Lower Order of Thinking. The teacher needs to do things differently by changing the lesson activities through creating novel and vivid activates for the student to engage them in the learning process as Arends suggested. Also, I believe that the teacher needs to shift the classroom environment from teacher centered to student centered class.
Although the students were passive the teacher tried to engage them by asking them to work in groups and Brainstorm their ideas about vocabulary related to traffic. This activity can be more creative and interesting by letting the students to use concept maps to brainstorm their ideas and organize their thoughts about traffic via write down the vocabulary with interactive images and videos. This will be a creative idea to help the students to represent their ideas and build on them. As Jonassen suggested that computers are mindtools which actively engage learners in creation of knowledge that reflect on their information rather than copying the teacher’s representation of information.
In my opinion, the teacher can get use of technology provided in the class to produce different activities to suite different learning styles. He can create articulate engage step by step exercise to teach the student the steps of writing an essay. Then to check the students’ understanding he can develop a small quiz in articulate engage.
REFLECTION: WEEK 3
To reflect on my third week in college I reviewed with my classmate our previous knowledge about Multiple intelligence and Bloom Taxonomy. It was helpful for me to scaffold my knowledge by discussing about these two theories. Then we posted a summary about applying these theories in education.
Furthermore, I had the chance to know more about applied learning and how it effects students performance and learning. One of the important effects is applied learning effectively assist to manage people and time.
about my team work of WebQuest I decided to work with my Amna ^_^. We email Mr. Marc to meet him and to get the show of Seven Wonders.
At the end of the week we had an exam about the principles of design and the LMS/ MCS. At the beginning I was against having exams, but Miss Maryan changed my mind when she gives us an drawing exam rather than written in designing test. It was the first time for me to have a drawing exam. Her purpose was to let us applied what we learn as a theory and check our understanding.
Thinking
I imagine that it is like different hats that the learners ware when they started to think about a solution for any problem. Also, their brain process differently when they ware these different hats of thinking.
Week 2 Reflection.
This is To reflect on my second week in college I learned several things through some of my courses. I changed my perspective about art when I learned in Designing course about art. It was my first time know that art is not paintings architecture, pictures etc.. , but it is a it is the message that the artist wants the audience to get. This was a huge shift in my thinking ^_^. Furthermore, I was very excited to learn about the principles of art and the teacher gives us examples to understand the meanings. As well, because I am visual learner I had the chance to draw the principles to understand, which helped me to understand more.
Moreover, I learned about the meaning of learning theory, which is the continuous change in behavior and knowledge that result from experience. I was very happy to link what I learned in first year about scaffolding students’ learning to what I learned about the phase of learning.
